Eight of the nine need nothing from you

No signup, no key, no waiting list, no credit card. Clone it, point it at a Postgres, and eight communities start filling the feed within a minute. Nothing is ever simulated — a source that cannot be read returns no rows, not plausible-looking ones.

Reddit needs no key, and its app form is a dead end

The Atom search feed answers site-wide with no account. Self-service app registration closed in November 2025 under Reddit's Responsible Builder Policy.

That form still renders and still silently does nothing — no error, no app, no explanation — so it is not the route to take. Topic search runs through Reddit's Atom feed instead, which needs no credential and returns posts from every subreddit at once. An approved key still buys two things: a much higher rate limit, and the score and comment counts the feed leaves out. Credentials issued before November 2025 still work, and the adapter prefers them whenever they are present.

How it behaves on someone else's infrastructure

These are free, public, mostly volunteer-run services. Getting blocked is treated here as a bug in this software, not as bad luck.

  • Identifies itselfEvery outbound request sends SOURCE_USER_AGENT. You set it to something that names you and gives a contact.
  • Rate limited per hostNot per source and not per user — per host, so ten topics hitting one API stay inside one budget.
  • Backs offOn 429 and on 5xx, with the delay growing rather than retrying straight into a wall.
  • Crawls once, fans outThe worker reads each distinct watched account once system-wide per tick. A hundred users watching one account is one request.
  • Reads slow things slowlyThe topic corpus runs every sixth tick. Hacker News does not turn over in five minutes, and re-pulling it would spend someone else’s rate limit for nothing.
